FEB 2006 Popular presenter launches campaign to save children’s lives Celebrity TV presenter Mark Simpkin is set to launch a campaign to protect children across Eastern Cheshire against the dangers of second hand smoke Mark, who lives in Adlington with soap star wife Tricia Penrose and their two-year-old son Jake, is backing Eastern Cheshire Primary Care Trust’s (PCT) Smoke Free Homes campaign. The campaign seeks to reduce the dangers of passive smoking to children, which includes bronchitis, pneumonia and respiratory problems by encouraging parents who smoke to do so in another room or outside the home. The popular presenter of ITV1’s I Want That House will be addressing a packed house of midwives, nursery nurses and health visitors at Macclesfield Town Hall on Thursday, February 9, at 11am. “This is an issue close to my heart,” said Mark, who has also worked as a presenter on ITV1’s This Morning and BBC1’s Holiday. “When I was approached to give my support, I didn’t have to think twice. I have a young son and I hate the thought of any harm coming to him through being exposed to second hand smoke.” Mike Bridges, Principal Health Promotion Advisor for the Specialist Health Promotion Service at Eastern Cheshire PCT, said: “Almost half of all children in the UK are exposed to tobacco smoke at home, which increases the risk of a wide range of health dangers including heart disease in later life. It is vital we begin raising awareness amongst parents of these potential killers.” He said that passive smoking is also linked with: * asthma * middle ear infection * behavioural problems * neurobiological impairment * chronic obstructive airway disease and cancer * sudden infant death syndrome. “Children of parents who smoke are more likely to be admitted to hospital for bronchitis and pneumonia in the first year of life,” Mr Bridges added. He said the key message of the campaign was not to force parents to quit, but to encourage them to take every measure possible to limit their children’s exposure to second hand smoke by offering advice and support. These measures include: * smoking outside or in another room * not smoking in the car * not taking children to public places where smoking is allowed. Following the launch of the campaign Laura Shard, Smoke Free Project Advisor, will be available at a stall in the Grosvenor Centre, Macclesfield, offering information and advice to members of the public.
